NEET UG 2025: NTA Introduces New Tie-Breaking Rule and Exam Pattern Changes
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced significant updates for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025, including a new tie-breaking rule and a return to the pre-COVID exam pattern. These changes aim to streamline the evaluation process and ensure fairness in ranking candidates.
New Tie-Breaking Rule
In cases where two or more candidates score the same marks, the NTA will use a seven-step process to determine their All India Rank (AIR). If the tie persists after these steps, an independent expert committee will resolve it through a “random process.” The tie-breaking criteria are as follows:
- Higher marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology).
- Higher marks in Chemistry.
- Higher marks in Physics.
- Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers across all subjects.
- Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Biology.
- Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Chemistry.
- Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Physics.
This new rule ensures a transparent and systematic approach to resolving ties, maintaining the integrity of the ranking process.
Return to Pre-COVID Exam Pattern
The NTA has decided to revert to the pre-COVID exam format for NEET UG 2025. This means:
- The total number of questions will be reduced.
- The exam duration will be shortened to 180 minutes.
- Optional questions, introduced during the pandemic, will no longer be included.
The revised exam will consist of:
- 45 questions each from Physics and Chemistry.
- 90 questions from Biology (Botany + Zoology).
Exam Details and Registration
NEET UG 2025 will be conducted offline using OMR sheets on May 4, 2025, in a single shift from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The online registration process is now open on the official NTA website (neet.nta.nic.in) and will close on March 7, 2025, at 11:50 PM.
