The Indian military successfully repelled a two-wave attack by Pakistan on May 7-8, employing a mix of Russian, Israeli, and domestically produced weapons systems. The defensive operation saw the deployment of Russia’s S-400 Triumf air defense systems, Israel’s Harop kamikaze drones, and India’s Akash surface-to-air missiles to neutralize incoming missiles and drones targeting military bases across northern and western India. The strikes were detected and intercepted by an integrated radar and command network, marking a significant demonstration of India’s multi-layered defense capabilities.

The Pakistani offensive unfolded in two phases—the first overnight on May 7-8, targeting 15 cities including Jammu, Srinagar, Pathankot, and Amritsar, and the second on the evening of May 8, focusing on border districts in Punjab and Rajasthan. Indian forces responded with precision counterstrikes on military installations in Lahore and other key locations, using loitering munitions like the Harop to disable Pakistani air defense radars.

India’s S-400 systems, acquired from Russia in a ₹39,000 crore deal, played a pivotal role, intercepting threats at ranges of up to 400 km. While three units are operational, delays in the remaining two have been attributed to Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine. Unconfirmed reports suggest an S-400 battery may have downed a Pakistani F-16 jet during the engagement.

The Akash missile system, designed to intercept high-speed, low-visibility targets, was also deployed alongside anti-drone grids to ensure comprehensive airspace denial. Debris from intercepted Pakistani munitions has been recovered from multiple sites, confirming the effectiveness of India’s defensive measures.

This escalation follows India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7, a retaliatory strike against terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) using Scalp cruise missiles, Hammer smart bombs, and M777 howitzers. The operation was a direct response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 Indians, predominantly Hindus.

Pakistan’s attempts to escalate tensions were met with “proportionate and precise” countermeasures, according to India’s defense ministry. The use of advanced Russian-Israeli-Indian weaponry underscores India’s strategic preparedness amid ongoing border tensions.
